UT Health Hill Country brings the specialty resources of UT Health and the renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to Boerne, Texas, a neighboring community outside the Northwest San Antonio metro area. Offering a comprehensive range of cancer therapies, the clinic prioritizes patients with one-stop care for children, teens, and adult patients.

Aligned with our related work in direct patient care, we seek to optimize the patient experience through architecture and interior design. Simple but important gestures, such as a welcoming covered entry, organized intake sequence, and comfortably appointed waiting areas for families combine to send a message of care and compassion.

The Hill Country Clinic’s location suggested an architectural vocabulary and palette of materials drawn from this much-loved part of rural Texas. “We leaned into the regional sense of place,” notes Mike Lanford. Local limestone on the entry tower contrasts cleanly with corrugated aluminum cladding, a contemporary combination of natural and manmade materials. A port-cochère and pergola provide shade for arriving patients and visitors. Patients waiting areas offer comfortable seating, abundant natural light, and views to the landscape – adding to a sense of well-being. Furniture and finishes contribute to a sense of calm and comfort, with material specifications keyed toward durability and clinical cleanliness.

“Balancing the robust program of services with a small footprint challenged us to think resourcefully,” notes Ariel Chavela. A comprehensive range of primary care and specialty physicians, along with advanced imaging, form a one-stop resource for cancer patients.
