Mass transit drives future growth: Robert Thompson VIA Transit Center Vision Plan

Alamo worked with Economic Planning Systems to plan and prove the feasibility of a high-intensity multi-modal transportation district centered on the Robert Thompson Transit Center on the eastern edge of downtown. The study analyzed regional and micro-market conditions to project capture rates over a multi-year build-out.

Improved mass transit is fundamental to future growth in San Antonio, and throughout the 1-35 corridor. VIA has been engaged in a comprehensive planning process centered on multimodal transportation services. The Robert Thompson VIA Transit Center Vision Plan explored expansion of the existing facility, located adjacent to the Alamodome, to improve in-system connectivity, boost ridership, and to position San Antonio for future links to regional systems.

Our understanding of local market conditions, construction costs, and comparable projects in the pipeline informed the economic analysis. We generated a set of program assumptions and modified that program throughout the process as the economic data was generated.

The study area extends from Thompson Station, and includes properties between Houston Street on the north, Cherry Street on the east, East César A. Chávez Boulevard on the south, and the Union Pacific Railroad on the west, which is adjacent to both Thompson Station and Sunset Station. This area contacts a variety of public and privately owned parcels, including approximately 20 acres of publicly held, underutilized land on both sides of Montana Street, adjacent to Thomson Station and the Alamodome. These parcels offer a significant opportunity for future transit-oriented development, which could increase density, enhance access to transit services at Thomson Station, and support implementation of the SA Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan.
