The jury acknowledged measurable successes like increased productivity, high building occupancy, and a stronger corporate identity.

This award recognizes a built architectural project of enduring significance that has stood the test of time and continues to set standards of excellence for its architectural design and significance. Recipient demonstrates excellence in function, both in original form and by today’s design standards.

The Fairmount Hotel adaptive reuse project (1985-1986) signaled a turning point in San Antonio’s posture toward preserving its historic urban core. To make room for the 1968 World’s Fair, whole swaths of downtown legacy neighborhoods were razed. In contrast, The Fairmount’s 1985 rescue from the wrecking ball made the newspapers – one small hotel saved from demolition by being winched across town to its new site.
We appreciate the AIA’s special acknowledgement of the project’s timelessness.

The Architecture Firm Award, the highest honor the Society can confer upon an architecture firm, is granted to a Texas-based firm that consistently produces notable works of architecture, and that has made contributions to the profession and community for at least ten years. In making its announcement, the Texas Society of Architects (TxA) stated that it was granting the award to Alamo Architects for its “30-year history of contributions to the Built Environment, Community, and the Profession.”
Alamo Architects is grateful and honored to have been recognized by the Texas Society of Architects with the 2014 Architecture Firm Award. Since the firm’s founding, we have supported the work of the AIA in elevating architectural practice. Today, members of our team participate in leadership roles in our local AIA San Antonio Chapter, Texas Society of Architects, and AIA at the national level.
SoFlo Office Campus
Alamo Headquarters
The SoFlo office campus is a joint adaptive reuse project developed by Alamo Architects and OCO Architects (now LPA San Antonio). The joint project provided separate headquarters for both offices, connected by courtyards. By embracing context and honoring materiality, the creative adaptation of mid-century industrial buildings created an urban workplace oasis. Recognized for its pioneering neighborhood redevelopment, architecture, and for resourceful sustainability strategies, the collaboration earned LEED Silver certification
