Alamo Architects’ Principal Nicki Marrone received the 2024 John Chase Award for Equitable Practice in Architecture at this year’s Texas Society of Architects conference in Houston. The award honors individuals, programs, or firms that have made significant contributions to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in architecture. The impressive roster of honorees at the 2024 TxA conference reflects the broad scope of architectural endeavor in Texas, acknowledging the firms and individuals who, through exceptional dedication, thought leadership, and elevation of craft have earned the recognition of their peers.
“Decide where you can make a difference. Make one change, towards a more equitable, and a better profession,” as Nicki Marrone put the challenge to fellow architects gathered for the event. In an era when architecture and engineering intake a wider demographic of new talent each year, the message has broad resonance. Her 2023 TxA Presidential platform, “Representation in Who We Are and What We Do,” expanded on her work chairing the TxA’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. As a principal directly involved our hiring and staffing, Nicki advocates for a more just workplace by creating space, promoting recognition, and looking to the future to cultivate the seeds of a more equitable practice. She notes, “The John S. Chase award was created not just to recognize where we are, but to shed light on what we have yet to do.”
In her nomination for the award by AIA San Antonio, Executive Director Torrey S. Carleton notes, “Nicki Marrone’s legacy of work for equitable practice is already stellar, but is only just beginning. She has affected change and will continue to push for more change.”
Congratulations, Nicki!
