Ever wonder where garbage trucks go for a bath? The Northwest Service Center is a maintenance hub for the many hard-working vehicles in the City fleet. Alamo Architects provided architectural design criteria (bridging documents) for this central fleet maintenance campus for the City of San Antonio. Our exploration of light industrial materials in City projects (such as fire stations) gave us a ready vocabulary to bring local identity to these municipal buildings – within the construction and budget parameters of building typology.
The Northwest Service Center provides central fleet maintenance facilities for five departments within the City of San Antonio. The service facility incorporates technological advances in repair, fueling and washing of both heavy and light duty service vehicles, and of construction equipment. Our approach to civic infrastructure projects is to recognize the programmatic needs of the client, and respond accordingly with good design and proper specs: the campus architecture is capable, durable, and appropriate to its use case.
The buildings create a campus on a 13-acre truck parking area. The facility houses multiple functions: the administrative/crew quarters building, a vehicle maintenance facility, a seven-bay truck/heavy truck cleanout facility, an auto wash, fuel pump islands, and a storage/shops/ welding building.
The Administration Building is designed for efficiency of build, cost-effective upkeep and livability: the one-story, pre-engineered metal building houses the administrative offices and crew facilities for Public Works Stormwater Operations, Public Works Street Maintenance, Solid Waste Field Operations and the Graffiti Abatement Group. Transcending simple utility in the Administration Building, interior spaces elevate workplace quality for City staff. Conference rooms and offices are open to abundant natural light and views to the landscape through clerestory and storefront windows, and deep roof overhangs balance daylighting and mitigate solar gain.
The Vehicle Service Facility is a tall one-story, pre-engineered metal building with six drive-through service bays, another two bays for welding and certification for servicing vehicles, with locker rooms and customer service facilities.
