A Lakeside Academic Oasis: Master Plan for Alamo College’s Northwest Vista.

Alamo Architects crafted a new Campus Master Plan for Northwest Vista College in 2005, bringing an authentically responsive approach to the expanded campus – where landscape, buildings, and the spaces in between work together in a “messy vitality.”

“The new Master Plan recognizes the guiding principles established by the users and embraces the concept of ‘messy vitality’ over ‘obvious unity,’” notes Mike Lanford, Senior Principal, referencing the influential theoretical work of Venturi Scott Brown. “This approach allowed the plan to accommodate existing conditions, new construction, and complex infrastructure into a whole that is greater than it parts.”

Campus Master Plan

Northwest Vista College, initially built in 1997 to accommodate 3,300 students, has since grown to support an enrollment of over 16,000. In implementing the Master Plan for this rapidly growing campus, Alamo drew on design experience with community colleges, a historical perspective of this particular campus, and a sense of continuity within the planning process to bring the new Campus Master Plan to life.

The Alamo Architects Master Plan demonstrates creativity and practical solutions for creating a campus that is both a place of learning and a distinctive community landmark. The plan provided an inspiring starting point for Alamo to become the lead architectural firm for the implementation of the 450,000 SF expansion program. Along with two other architectural firms, we designed new classroom and academic support buildings for the campus expansion around the defining landscape feature, a tranquil lake.

Among the guiding principles established, we prioritized key elements:

  • Preservation and celebration of the native landscape.
  • Development of a more natural connection between the buildings and the landscape.
  • Creation of a campus with the characteristics of a university and the convenience of a community college.

Capital Improvement Program

Following our successful completion of the campus master plan, Alamo Architects was selected as the lead architectural firm for the implementation of the 450,000 SF Northwest Vista College expansion program.
